I had to tear the page from the book to do the stitching, but I'll work out how to get it back in later. I decided to stitch black thread in a rough square, meandering pattern over the woven paper strips. Some are small, some are close together, some are joined and some are not. There is a line of silver thread around the outside of the whole thing too.
Next I used my watercolour pencils to add more interest and some green sparkling H2O ink, paint (? what is it exactly??) - but this did not show up in the photo.
Not sure what to do around the edges, although I do like the white space so I might just leave it and journal across the bottom.
I have to say that I am really enjoying these challenges. They've been just the right creative boost I needed.
Thanks Michelle!

THIS IS STUNNING! Debra, what a great looking page! It's been so interesting to see how each crusader begins and finishes their page or piece. Love that you added the stitching, then pushed it a little further with the watercolored bits. A really gorgeous composition, with such delightful colors. I love how the perforated edge of circles is another element that works with all the polka dots.
ReplyDeleteI think you should color copy this, then add your journaling and attach back in the journal, but keep the original AS IS, IN A FRAME FOR YOUR WALL. Hint: this piece will work for TWO upcoming crusades. Thank you for sharing your work with the team!!!
Debra, I love your interpretation of Michelle's challenge! The watercolors really add to the torn papers and I love the stitching!
ReplyDeleteI love this!!! Your colors are so bright and refreshing. The stitching is awesome, too and the whole composition is just beautiful! Michelle is so right-this should be framed.
ReplyDeleteLove the stitching and stripping and piecing and playing ! Wonderful job and exactly what the crusades are all about, right?
ReplyDeleteI agree with the gang about framing this.
Thanks guys! Your comments have made my day! Michelle, I do like your suggestion about colour copying - will definitely do that.
ReplyDeleteThis is really fantastic!
ReplyDeleteI love this, well done! It looks so happy! Thanks fo the nice comment over on my blog.
ReplyDeleteI always love seeing stitching on a page, even though I never do any myself for some reason (bone idle I guess). I think yours looks great. And as for the Twinkling H2Os - hadn't really thought about it but suspect paint ;-)
ReplyDeleteOOOHHH. I love how you wove your strips together. Pretty. The watercolor touch really brightens it up a bit. I love it.
ReplyDeleteLove the colors you used, the stitching, all the squares....it all works together to make a truly wonderful page. I agree with Michelle, you should frame this and hang it on your wall.
ReplyDeletereally like the bright colours of this page
ReplyDeleteyeah the stitching is really cool. i wish i was brave enough to try it :)
ReplyDeleteWonderful work. I don't even remember how to thread my machine so stitching isn't likely for me unless it's digital. I love those blocks of color and your flickr pics are great in showing some of your steps.
ReplyDeleteA unique and lovely page, Debra - it's so interesting to see how everyone interprets the challenge differently. Love the stitching!
ReplyDeleteHello Debra,
ReplyDeletenice page : I like the muted colors of the stripped paper and the bold shapes on top. Because you used watercolors, you can still see the background too and this makes this really layered.
I like the stitching you did : which needles do you use and which setting on your sewing machine ?
greetings from belgium
Inge
Very nice!Love the stitching and the paper you have used - is it a bit retro?
ReplyDeleteI always find it difficult to stitch in a book, but I sometimes bend and almost tear it to put it under my sewing machine. Love your page, beautiful colors and I think a color copy will work to put back in your book.
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful, I haven't yet used my sewing machine in the crusades but I love what you did. The watercolours are so fresh.
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone for your encouraging comments.
ReplyDeletedon't be afraid to sew paper!!

ReplyDeleteThis is really great, the watercolours really make the page 'pop'

ReplyDeleteThis is such a great idea and I love how you did something really different and inspiring. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteDebra, Your collages are so fresh and happy. The stitching is very cool in gridded format, nicely done. Stitching on paper is positively addictive, in such a good way!
